Adoption Procedure

C. TRIPS TO BULGARIA AND MEETING THE CHILD

After applicants have received a referral (proposal) for a child, they have 2 months within which they shall organize their 1-st trip to Bulgaria and meet the child in the respective institution, in which he/she is placed. This could be an orphanage, a foster family or another institution which provides a residential social care to the child.
The stay in Bulgaria cannot be shorter than 5 business days. While in Bulgaria, applicants will be accompanied by an interpreter from ANIDO, and, in case it is necessary, they can rely on a specialist from ANIDO, i.e. a psychologist, pediatrician and/or a pedagogue.

It is important to know that Bulgarian legislation allows applicants to accept a referral after having seen the child for less than 5 days. However, there are 2 conditions upon which this option is possible:

1) The applicants have a grounded reason due to which they cannot travel to Bulgaria within the 2 month period (illness, financial difficulties, urgent job duties or difficulties to prepare for the trip)

and

2) The applicants have to sign in their country of residence a notary certified declaration that they accept the risks related with the origin and the future physical and mental state and development of the child and to indicate the reasons for their impossibility to travel and meet the child.
